Things people ask at the counter.

Answers to what people actually ask at the counter: timing, cost, appointments, what to bring. If yours is not here, call, WhatsApp, or come in, Monday to Saturday, 10:30 to 16:00.

Do I need a design before I come in?+

No. Some people arrive with a drawing, some with a photograph, some with an idea and nothing else. I start with a conversation at the counter, then sketches, then a CAD model you can see from every side before anything is made.

Which metals and stones can you work in?+

Yellow, white and rose gold, and platinum. Diamonds and coloured stones. If you have gold of your own, or a stone from an old piece, bring it; using it is often the point.

How is the price worked out?+

From the metal, the stones, and how much work the design takes. I give budget guidance at the first meeting, and it stays honest all the way through, so there is no surprise when the piece is finished.

How far ahead should I start?+

Earlier than you think. A ring made from scratch goes through design, a CAD model, casting and finishing, and stones sometimes have to be sourced. Tell me the date and I will tell you honestly whether it can be done.

Can you keep it a surprise?+

Yes. Ring size is the usual problem; bring a ring they already wear, or a photograph of it on their hand, and I will get close. Resizing afterwards is a small job.

Can the wedding band be made to fit the engagement ring?+

That is exactly what a shaped or fitted band is for, and it is easier when the same bench makes both.

Do I need an appointment for a repair?+

No. Bring the piece in during opening hours, Monday to Saturday, 10:30 to 16:00. I will look at it with you and tell you what it needs.

Can you repair antique or inherited jewellery?+

Yes, and it is some of my favourite work. Pieces handed down through a family carry a great deal, so my aim is always to restore them to their original condition, not to change them.

Can you resize my ring?+

Resizing is one of the most common jobs at the bench. Bring the ring, and if you are unsure of the new size I will measure your finger here.

Which watches do you service?+

Rolex, Omega, TAG Heuer, Longines, Cartier, and all makes with automatic, manual-wind or quartz movements. Bring the watch and I will open it and show you what it needs.

How long does a service take?+

It depends on the movement and on parts. Some services wait on parts and can take several weeks. I will tell you before I start, and I will call you the day it is ready.

Do you do batteries and straps?+

Yes. Quartz watches, batteries, straps and bracelets, as well as full services.

What is an insurance valuation for?+

Your insurer needs a written description and a current value for a piece before they will cover it properly, and again if it is ever lost or stolen. I prepare that document here at the shop.

What should I bring?+

The piece itself, and any paperwork you have for it: receipts, certificates for stones, or an older valuation. None of that is essential, but it helps.

Where are you, and when are you open?+

14 West Street, Dorking, RH4 1BL, the red shop. Monday to Saturday, 10:30 to 16:00. Closed on Sunday.

Can I send you a photo first?+

Yes. WhatsApp a photograph of the piece and a line about what you would like done, and I will get back to you with a first opinion.
